Welcome to Eighth Grade!!!
Our class is a small group Language Arts class that has the benefit of two teachers.(period 7 only) Mrs. Madison is the Special Education teacher in the class and Ms. Leifer is the English Language Learners teacher. We will concentrate on SOL objectives as well as individual goals in this class. Together we will have a successful year.

If you enter this room without a pass, you will be given an unexcused tardy. The consequences for being tardy are listed in your agenda.

*There is a variety of books in our classroom library. They are also available for checkout. Please have something to read on a daily basis. *
*We will read several novels this year to include: A Long Walk to Water, Rumble Fish, and Holes. *

IBMYP Language and Literature Objectives
Processes and skills used in our study of Language Arts are stated in four criteria.
We will work directly on your IEP goals in reading, writing and work habits. Hopefully, you will show improvement in these areas with consistent practice. In addition to our classwork, often you will work on individual assignments in your IEP areas.
ELL Modifications (period 7 only)
Additionally, for those students that are English Language Learners as well, we will focus on developing more sophisticated language, both verbal and written. Strategies will be used to establish prior knowledge before learning a new concept. These strategies will be helpful to all students.
Missing/Late Assignment Policy
If you are absent from class or you have lost the assignment, it is your responsibility to get any assignments that are missed. Copies of the assignments will be available in the missing work binder.
Late work will be accepted. However, it is your responsibility to get assignments in by the due date.
Each assignment will be collected, graded and then put into a binder that will be kept in this room. Each binder will have sections for warm-ups, notes, classwork (reading and writing objectives), and vocabulary. All assignments must be labeled with objective, name, date, and title.
Class Syllabus must be signed, returned, and present in your binder at all times.

*There will be opportunities for retesting on all assignments after a concept has been retaught. We will review concepts frequently throughout the year. We do want you to SUCCEED!!!*
I am available on Thursdays until 4:15 for extra help. Please let me know in advance if you plan to stay. I am also available at lunch, as well.

I am an inclusion teacher, as well. In addition to Language Arts, I also teach 6th and 8th grade Science. I am often in other rooms throughout the day. However, students can usually find me in room 4.
