What else is happening during National School Lunch Week, you ask? Locally grown foods will be served, and we encourage parents and other family members to come join us for lunch. Stop by the cafeteria and see for yourself what delicious, healthy choices are available to students every day!

School Food and Nutrition Services Celebrates Virginia Farm to School Week

PWCS School Food and Nutrition Services celebrates Virginia Farm to School Week, October 7-11, 2019! Did you know your school cafeteria serves seasonal Virginia produce all year long? This week we will be serving apples from Crown Orchards in Charlottesville, Virginia, and broccoli from Parker Farm in Oak Grove, Virginia.

Incorporating local products into our menus gives students the opportunity to enjoy nutritious, fresh fruits and vegetables, while learning about the seasonality of foods and how foods are grown. These products support local farms and are a tasty way to improve the health of our children!

To celebrate Virginia Farm to School Week, all students who choose the hot vegetable item on the specified date below will receive broccoli seed paper to grow their own broccoli!

Elementary students - Monday, October 7th
Middle school students - Tuesday, October 8th
High school students - Friday, October 11th

School Food and Nutrition Services is also participating in the “Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth!” on Wednesday, October 9th at 10:00 am. If your school or class wants to participate, let your Cafeteria Manager know how many apples you need by September 25th.

We would love to see pictures of your students participating in the “Crunch” at your school. Tag us on Twitter (@PWCSNutrition) or Instagram (@PWCSNutrition_)!
